It's interesting being in the design industry. My career has mostly been within startups so I have the opportunity to wear many hats. My entrepreneurial itch gets to play in new ways each place I go. Design Idealism actually morphs into strategic compromises that fit best for each stage of a company's growth. You can't control it all, but you get to pick which fires burn and which you put out. I love being able to build early and see a ripple effect internally. My current role has allowed me the benefit of being a part of both the product and marketing organizations, shaping redesigns and experiences for customers on both sides. It's a lot of work but I love it.
I think Design leadership plays out in culture more than in structure. Build teams that love to work together and the desired alignment happens with joy instead of pain. People are worth investing in more than perfection. I know it's cliche but in actuality the process is better than the destination.
How do you feel waking up tackling your job? Optimistic? Hopefully you stick through the pain and sow seeds of joy in the process. It's not always roses but those who fight for culture and delight in user journeys have the best success. Well these are my random Saturday thoughts.
